Making Your Neighborhood Fire Safe

The San Rafael Fire Department is urgently requesting citizens be pro-active about vegetation management around their homes.  In July 2007, an ordinance was passed which affects all properties located within the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). MANY STREETS IN THE WEST END ARE ON THE WUI MAP.  Visit www.cityofsanrafael.org/Government/Fire.htm to view the map and find each parcel number and address located in the WUI.

The following points emphasize some of the major clean-up standards that are required:

  • Your defensible space is out 100 feet from your house in all directions.

  • Cut grasses so they are no more than three inches high.

  • Limb up trees to 10 feet above the ground or, for shorter trees, 1/3 the overall height of the tree.

  • Trim trees 10 to 15 feet away from your chimney.

  • Space trees and shrubs 10 to 15 feet apart and prune away dead or dying branches or plants.

  • Remove ALL Junipers and Bamboo from within 15 feet of your house NOW.
